...Emission testing is not impossible nor is it expensive.

In most countries where tail pipe emission testing has been introduced it has been regarded as the only area of significant growth for the workshops. Tail pipe emission testing has significantly increased sales of time (labour for testing and labour for repairs) and parts.
The workshop's investment in time is largely low skilled labour for the inspection process and some optional high skilled labour for the repairs.
The investment in equipment is of a variable level, depending on what type of garage or testing station is performing the testing. The return on investment makes for some very interesting reading and has been under and over stated in many publications. The best advice is to go to a financial advisor and let them do the calculations if you are not sure!

As Emission Testing NZ 2006 Ltd, (established by YES Inc and AECS Ltd) it has been our intention to guide NZ workshops to an achievable and sustainable system for performing emission tests for your customers.
The YES Incorporated Society is a group of Australian and New Zealand based diagnostic experts, and AECS Ltd is a New Zealand based diagnostics and emissions training provider.
To become part of the Emission Testing NZ structure is a simple and transparent process, and it will give your operation a boost in credibility.

The easiest thing is to imagine the feeling your customer will get when they receive a printed certificate showing that they do not participate in unnecessary fuel wasting and polluting, as their car is up to ETNZ emission standards.

If you have been maintaining that car, you will get the credit for their good feeling when the car passes and you will most likely end up repairing the vehicle when the car fails.

    ETNZ

ETNZ is structured in a format to keep our costs low, and to ensure that any profit which is made is fed back to the garages participating.
ETNZ provides the standards for testing, so that you do not have to explain the standard to the customer, who could think that you are making pass or fail levels up to suit your own business.
The testing performed for the MOT, ARTA, BCCC and ARC combined with the testing which is happening throughout the country will modify the ETNZ Pass and Fail limits from time to time. Also the testing performed under the ETNZ umbrella by joining testing facilities will affect the NZ pass and fail limits. It is not simply a matter of copying some levels from other countries as our fleet is so diverse. What we do copy is the testing methodology, as there is no sense in re-inventing the wheel.
Anything outside the mainstream testing methods will make the equipment instantly too expensive for our small country. However testing equipment does have to be of an ETNZ approved standard to nationally ensure consistency in the test results.
ETNZ offers the structure for the actual testing, checking of equipment, the training of inspectors and the training of the repairers, this is where our backing of AECS Ltd is important.
ETNZ will also gather the data and share this with the Ministry Of Transport to help or guide the decision makers into realistic legal pass and fail levels.
ETNZ does not put up ridiculous and expensive requirements if you are interested in participating. Our wish to make emission testing affordable to most workshops and in doing so collectively promote to government that we in this industry can act to improve air quality and have the ability to provide in service emissions testing.

We are currently working together with a group of lawyers to properly form a nation wide Co-op structure. We expect this to be set up and signed off around the time of this publication.

    Further information

Our ETNZ web site www.etnz.co.nz has information request forms available, which can be filled out on line. We will contact you to seek out with you what type of testing station you may already be, or what tooling and training might be required to get you there. After this contact we will send out an information pack which will outline the business part of ETNZ, it will show how the share breakdown works in relation to the number of inspections you make per year. It will also explain the dividend disrtibution per share and what other rights and obligations you will have as a transacting share holder in this co-op.

Again the system is really simple and easy so that your focus can stay where it belongs; looking after your customers and repairing their vehicles.
