AECS training system AECS was first established in 1999 in Holland with as specific purpose to bring electronic diagnostic training to New Zealand. The training techniques and level of diagnostic skill offered are directly copied from my tutors in Holland. Where the training systems are different to what is required in New Zealand, adaptions have been made for our market with its very large variety of brands, models and systems. I have travelled the world as a trainer and have never experienced something like our NZ market. Relative late model cars with an enormous variety of different systems, many systems which where never meant to be exported to any country. Many systems that where deemed too radical, to run the risk of warranty claims, and which where only designed for Japanese conditions (e.g. Fuel). Even your colleagues in Australia have it easy, there are not nearly as many models and systems available, as the government banned the second hand import system like we have. This makes their database systems and equipment largely incompatible with our market. Also the tutors over there have a much easier task than what is required here. I have had many tutors in my training seminars throughout Australia. These tutors confirmed this observation. The adaptions for our market took about a full year (full time) to complete for the lower level training seminars and is on going. The training seminars are running very successfully throughout NZ and Australia since 2002. In the beginning we offered only with a hand full of different seminars, now it has evolved into a structured system where any experienced technician with a competent brain and passion for the job can take a strand up to the very highest level. After the highest level an optional annual exam in conjunction with the MTA can be done to test your own ability and to see if training seminars leading up to the exam have changed.
Upon passing this exam your name and company will be published on a web page accessible for anyone. This web page will be reloaded every 12 months after a full round of exams. The exams will be conducted via the internet, the studying (seminars) will always be with a tutor at the many different locations throughout the country. The level that needs to be reached in for example the engine management systems (petrol and Diesel) before an exam can be attended to, is very high. The highest level of training is where a blank page on a laptop will be put in front of you and where you will construct a piece of closed loop engine management software, consisting out of many pages. I can only speak for myself, but learning how to write (engine management) software changed my thinking in diagnostics completely. Even though I regarded myself as a very competent diagnostician before, I realised at that point that it was all trying, guesswork and luck, instead of an efficient money making venture. There are of course many people out there that won't need any of this, they solve all problems already and never have any doubt in their mind about what they have done, or why problems have (re) appeared.. They are the lucky ones, but let me assure you that many of the people that I have met through my seminars are actually of very high calibre and would stand their ground in any industry. They all responded similar to the seminars; very enthusiastic and fully charged to get on with what after all is just a normal part of daily automotive engineering. This coming year AECS will be holding seminars again throughout NZ, we already have many enrolments as a result of the preliminary calendar published on our website, where also the seminar descriptors can be viewed. This year we will also do a technical presentation after seminars in an area, here we go into the technical details of some of the techtips stories that have appeared in the Radiator magazine. This is where you can also get an impression of the training seminars (if you are not sure about attending) and some of the diagnostic equipment we use and have available. Take your pick out of our offerings and see if I can challenge your brain! I am sure you won't be wasting your time, if anything treat it as a different (extra) perspective to broaden your ability to solve problems. Looking forward meeting you during one of the many training seminars around the country! For AECS Herbert Leijen (trainer / research) 06 8749 077 www.aecs.net |
