2) Side slip test

The first platform that the vehicle will drive onto is the side slip tester (A).

On a normal vehicle with a degree of toe-in the road will be 'pushed apart' while the vehicle is moving forward.

One wheel will hold position on the concrete floor while the other moves the platform side ways.

The following screen will be displayed while the test is being stored in the PC.

The black line in the green bar shows if the steering was moved while the measurement was taken, affecting the measurement. The line should be virtually straight.

Review test

On the computer's screen are the results displayed as follows:

Sideslip tester results.

The value is displayed in metres per kilometre displacement (m/km).

Limits

The text and bar graph will change colour when certain limits are exceeded. The graph and text will turn yellow when the results are within the marginal limits and turn red when the results are exceeding the maximum limits. The limits are set by the testing station or by a factory trained service agent.

On the results page the limits show up as dotted lines.

Limits are set at 7m/km for marginal and at 14m/km maximum.

As an example are the limits in this screen adjusted to 4m/km for marginal and to 7m/km for maximum

Note: Sideways road movement will also be caused by uneven caster and grossly uneven camber with correct toe-in/out.
