4.2) Test procedure

The vehicle will enter the tester activating two vehicle presence sensors, indicating to the machine a vehicle has entered the tester. After the vehicle has been in the tester for an adjustable period of time two 5.5 KW motors will slowly start turning the brake rollers. The motors start slow in an electronic controlled manner to reduce machine wear, and therefore increasing durability.

  1. The screen will indicate to the operator that at first no brake pedal should be depressed, this is to allow the machine to measure residual brake force.
Residual brake force will be high with for example sticky callipers or transmission faults.
  2. Next the screen will indicate with a large icon at the bottom of the page that the brake can be gently applied until a certain brake force is achieved, than hold the pedal steady. During this time a brake ovality test is performed, to check for example for disk run-out.

  3. The yellow rectangles indicate to the operator that the ovality test is being performed.

  4. After several seconds (adjustable) the machine will prompt you to lock up the brakes. The rollers will stop when one or both wheels begin to loose grip with the rollers, measured with a slip sensor. The percentage of slip where the machine is sensitive to is adjustable, making the test from very easy on tyres to ripping into the tyres. During the test two very large bar graph's for brake force and a smaller bar graph for brake balance are visible. Also is the axle brake efficiency visible during the test.

Actual screen visible during and just after the VTEQ front brake test. On this screen is indicated by the icon in the bottom right corner that wheel lock up occurred resulting in the test being completed.
The test will also stop when the wheels are pushed out of the tester, indicated by a different icon as pictured.

Time and sensitivity adjustments on the brake tester can only be made by factory trained technicians upon the suggestions of the operator and LTNZ.

When the test is completed the vehicle drives out of the tester assisted by the tester's electronic braking.
