European legal emissions inspection procedure with the:
Diesel Emission tester OPA 100
OPA 100 Diesel opacity measuring unit.
The OPA 100 is for Diesel opacity measurements. The tester can be used for legal emission testing (WoF) in many countries around the world. The tester is programmable and can there for be adapted to changing government legislation.
The european variant of the periodical emission inspection procedure is called “Official Test” in the Brainbee emission tester. The measurement is used to gauge the Diesel emissions from a diesel vehicle, and with that the vehicle’s efficiency.
Using the Brainbee OPA 100 opacity tester, the inspector first sets the machine up to measure the oil temperature and the engine RPM.
The first screen of the tester asks for the vehicle details to be entered, these include heavy or light vehicle, turbo or N/A, year and rev range.
Once the details are entered the official measurement test begins.
Firstly, the machine checks that the engine is at operating temperature (above 80 deg C) using the oil temperature probe in the dipstick tube, or collects the engine temperature data through the E-OBD connector if the vehicle is E-OBD compatible (with the EOBD300 option).
Once the engine has reached operating temperature the program will carry into the next screen where the technician is asked to bring the engine to max revs for one second to clear out the exhaust, and to record the cut off speed of the engine.
The revs are measured by using either the magnetic pic up or by clamping onto the battery and measuring the alternator ripple.
Once the timer has ended, an automatic zero calibration is performed.
After the auto zero is complete, the technician can perfrom the test.
The tester first measures Idle speed and lets the engine stabilise.
When prompted by the screen, the technician is asked to snap the accelerator hard down and hold it there so the engine reaches its governed cut off speed.
