The emission testers (Petrol and diesel) need to be used with an oil temperature probe and an RPM pick up to get diagnostic results and to be allowed to perform official tests.
For Diesel a Piezo clamp RPM pick-up can be connected around the injector line and connected with an cable to the OPA 100 Unit. Also an oil temperature probe needs to be inserted into the dipstick tube and can be connected directly to the unit. The wires involved are almost prohibitive. This is why Brainbee has standard build into the OPA 100 an arial which can receive the signals from a radio transmitter, the MGT300/R.
For Petrol an inductive clamp RPM pick-up can be connected around ignition leads or injector power supply wires and connected with an cable to the AGS 200 or 688 Unit. Also an oil temperature probe needs to be inseted into the dipstick tube and can be connected directly to the unit. The wires are cluttering and almost prohibitive. This is why Brainbee has also standard build into the AGS 200 and the AGS 688 an arial which can receive the signals from the radio transmitter, MGT300/R.

The MGT 300/R has the ability to measure oil temperature and engine RPM. It will send the signals via radio waves to the emission tester (OPA and or AGS), so the actual emission tester can hand the signal to the PC or Laptop for display.
The MGT 300/R measures RPM via alternator ripple. A filtering process will measure the engine speed changes (voltage variations) as a result of compression and combustion. The only thing that needs to be selected on the control unit is the amount of cylinders and 4 or 2 stroke (default is 4 cylinder and 4 stroke). After a short calibration period the tester will display engine RPM.

The MGT 300/R can also be equipped with an inertia meter. The sensor is placed in a strong magnet, which is placed on a steel part of the engine in the vertical position. The engine vibrations will cause the sensor to react. The sensor's signal is transformed by the intelligent electronics of the MGT into an RPM reading.

The inertia meter can be used when for example the battery ripple is not pronounced enough. Care needs to be taken as to where the inertia meter is placed on the engine, on some well balanced engines several different positions might need to be tried.
E-OBD pick up

The MGT 300/R can also be equipped with an E-OBD pick up. This is only usefull for vehicles equipped with electronics which are able to communicate via the standardised "ISO9141, J1850PWM, J1850VPW, CAN-BUS" EOBD protocol.

In general is the E-OBD protocol available in petrol vehicles from 2000 onward and in Diesel vehicles from 2004 onward. The tester will take the RPM and engine temperature signals from the on board ECU. These signals are transformed by the intelligent electronics of the MGT into a temperature and RPM reading.
